Iron Lakes Trail Description

The Iron Lakes Hike is an excellent hiking option when in the Sierra National Forest. Offering an adventure for hikers, bikers, and off-roaders, this route is surprisingly secluded, which we love. A welcome change from the busyness of Yosemite National Forest, this hidden gem is an awesome experience! Shared with off-roaders and bikers, it is important to be mindful of passers-by! Additionally, when hiking in the winter months, be sure to use a pair of microspikes or snowshoes to easily navigate the likely snow-packed and icy terrain!

Setting out from the trailhead off Sky Ranch Road, the Iron Lakes Hike follows the Iron Mountain OHV Route. This route will guide you along the dirt road, heading northeast. As you wander through the woodlands, you will be granted sparing sights of the encompassing Sierra Nevada Mountains. When trekking in the summer months, you will notice dozens of vibrant wildflowers that line the road. Eventually, the path will gradually descend, guiding you to the shoreline of an Iron Lake.

Revel in the beauty of the blue-hued waters of the Iron Lakes and explore the basin of Iron Mountain that is adorned with charming alpine lakes. Notice the red hue of Iron Mountain, which hem the waters. After marveling in the beauty, retrace your footing along the path back to the trailhead.
