Waterton Lakes National Park Map

Waterton National Park is a beautiful park in the SW corner of Alberta where the prairies meet the Rocky Mountains. Located directly across the border from Glacier National Park in Montana, it is a must visit if you are planning a trip to Canada. Full of majestic mountains, beautiful lakes, bountiful wildlife, and some pretty spectacular hikes, Waterton has a bit of everything.

We love a trip to Waterton because it is a perfect getaway to slow down, with no busy cities nearby, the main town site is in the park itself. For years Waterton has been a popular destination for hikers in the summer, as the numerous routes provide views of remarkable beauty. Plus, the Triple Crown Challenge of Waterton National Park consisting of the hikes to Crypt Lake, Alderson - Carthew, and Akamina Ridge, is famous for some fairly exciting hike features such as a boat ride, a cliff traverse, a ladder, and a tunnel!

It is worth noting that the Kenow fire in the fall of 2017 did significant damage to the park, which has forever changed the landscape. We don’t yet know how much of the park will be open in the coming season, but fortunately the brave fire crews who battled the fire were able to save the town site. As with any fire, the devastation on the land can be difficult to accept and view. However, it does bring about a new opportunity to see how nature responds and recovers in these circumstances, and over the next decade or two it will be a wonderful experience to see the park come back and flourish once again.
