Elk Mountains Trail Map

Located in ‘The Centennial State’ of Colorado, the Elk Mountains are a collection of rugged peaks and expansive valleys to the southwest of Denver that are known to be a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. From summertime hikers to winter skiers and snowboarders, thousands of people flock to this area every year to experience the dramatic terrain that is arguably the most scenic in the entire state, and you would be hard-pressed to find anyone that left disappointed.

The range is home to six imposing fourteeners, the summits of which are the aim of many mountaineers who travel into the rugged landscape Elk Mountains in search of a true challenge in the sport. Alternatively, the ski resort towns of Aspen and Crested Butte serve as hubs for winter sports enthusiasts looking to take advantage of the heavy snowfall the region receives due to its position in the Rockies.

While it may seem like a wild and remote place, the Elk Mountains offer plenty of opportunities for newcomers to the outdoor adventure world to get outside and explore the natural beauty of Colorado. The range is situated within the White River National Forest, Gunnison National Forest, Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness, and Raggeds Wilderness areas, so you can rest assured that no matter your age or skill level, there will always be an exciting adventure around the corner in the Elk Mountains.
