Surrounded by the rugged mountain peaks of Vancouver Island’s interior, Port Alberni is a charming city located on the northeast tip of the Alberni Inlet, a saltwater inlet that opens up into the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean via Barkley Sound. Named for Don Pedro de Alberni, a Spanish officer in command of nearby Fort San Miguel from 1790-1792, the town is situated on the traditional lands of the Tseshaht and Hupacasath First Nations of the Nuu-Chah-Nulth Tribal Council.

Due to its easy access to the water, Port Alberni has long served as a hub for the fishing industry; however, with tourism growing on Vancouver Island, the city has seen an increase in the amount of visitors coming into the region for other aspects of adventure travel. From hiking in the nearby mountains and forests to water sports along the many rivers and lakes in the surrounding area, a trip to Port Alberni can take many different shapes and forms.
