The Rattus Maximus, Rat Trap, and Big Cheese Loop Trail is a fun adventure near Ridgway, Colorado that will take you along a multi-use trail to explore a forested hillside. While out hiking the trail, you will walk amongst countless trees and climb uphill through some switchbacks, before looping around the hillside on the return leg. Hikers should take note that this is primarily a mountain bike trail, so be sure to keep to the side of the path and make enough room for others to safely pass.

If you are after a fairly quick and easy adventure near Ridgway State Park that features some pleasant views, undulating terrain, and is suitable for the entire family to enjoy, then you should certainly check out the Rattus Maximus, Rat Trap, and Big Cheese Loop Trail.

Setting out from the trailhead, you will first head to the west along County Road 10 for a short distance, before turning to the north along County Road 10B. Here, you will traverse the forested hillside and make your way across the undulating terrain, working your way gradually uphill through the forest.

After climbing through a series of easy-going switchbacks, you will loop around the hillside and begin making your way back towards the south. Take some time to enjoy the views of the surrounding landscape, as you follow the Big Cheese Trail south through some more switchbacks on the return to the trailhead where you began.
