The Hayburn Wyke Walk is an undulating but not overly challenging route. It links the Wyke’s of Cloughton and Hayburn along an intriguing stretch of the Cleveland Way. Highlights include the waterfall at Hayburn Wyke and stunning views out to the North Sea and along the coastline to Scarborough.

Getting there

To get to the start of the Hayburn Wyke Walk, from Scarborough, head north on the A 171 towards Whitby. Once in the village of Cloughton, take Newlands Road and continue to the right as the main road bends sharply left. Immediately turn right to join Newlands Lane. Follow this road as it heads down towards the coast, there is parking here on the right-hand side in several laybys or further down a small car park. Failing both these, park back in the village, all free of charge!

Hayburn Wyke Walking Route Description

Kick off the Hayburn Wyke walk on Newlands Lane, heading towards the coast. Cross a small bridge, which intersects the route you will come back along. Continue on the lane, which brings you to a small car park just above Cloughton Wyke. From the car park, drop left to join the Cleveland Way. Follow the coastal path – dipping and rising as it hugs the cliff top. Look back to the south and spot Scarborough Castle high on the cliff and Filey Brigg further down the coast.

Eventually, after just over 1.2mi the path meets Hayburn Wyke Woods. Pass through the gate and continue into the woodland, following the path as it leads down the hill. At a junction, turn right, following the Cleveland Way signs. At the bottom of the steps again keep right. Follow the main path down as it winds through the pretty woodland. At the next junction turn right again, following the Cleveland Way sign and a stream to your left. Roughly 100 m further down you will come to the top of a waterfall, dropping off onto the rocky beach below.

If the tide permits, scramble down onto the beach for a better view! After enjoying the waterfall retrace your steps and at the junction continue on the footpath that follows the Hayburn Beck upstream. The path soon leaves the Beck and continues uphill. Cross several junctions while remaining on the main path until climbing some steps, veering right and meeting a gate to exit the woodland.

Follow the path through the field as it pulls gently around to the left and takes you to a gate leading into the grounds of a small hotel. Often busy on a sunny weekend, this is a great stop off. Pass the hotel to the right and continue ahead following the hotel access road – the right hand fork. Approximately 328ft from the hotel the road bends to the right, turn left to join the disused Scarborough-Whitby railway.

Look out for red deer in the meadows alongside and of course spectacular views out to the North Sea! Follow the track for 1.6mi, at which point you will come to the bridge you crossed on the way out. Take the steps on the right before passing under the bridge to climb off the track back onto Newlands Lane. Turn right and find your car.

I would recommend this trail for those who want to have a soul searching walk. I for one had a good self reflection while walking pass the dramatic scenery of the coastline. Just make sure to wear proper shoes because the trail requires you to walk on rocky terrain.
