Blacktail Butte Hike Description

The Blacktail Butte Hike is an epic excursion that boasts the prime opportunity to spot wildlife. Compared to most hikes in the park, this unofficial trail grants a tranquil experience, notably in the early mornings and evenings. As you trek, it is important to be mindful of wildlife, especially bears. Make sure you or someone in your party has bear spray and knows how to properly use it. Additionally, as the route is poorly marked, we encourage you to download the trail GPS before departure. Note the Grand Teton National Park charges an entrance fee; refer to the NPS website for additional information.

Setting out from the trailhead on the southeastern corner of the butte, hikers will be guided northwestwardly into the wilderness. Using the trail GPS, the route will begin to intensely climb through the forestlands. Mind your footing as rocks and rocks obstruct the path. Eventually, the route will guide you to the top of the mountain, granting sporadic views of the Tetons, the Gros Ventre Mountains, and the Jackson Valley through tree breaks.

Eventually, the path will begin to descend the northwestern slope of the butte, passing and sheer rockface before reaching the northern trailhead and parking lot. From here, simply turn around and retrace your steps back to your vehicle.
