Eaton Lake Trail Description

The Eaton Lake Trail is a difficult out-and-back hiking route south of Hope that will take you from the banks of Silverhope Creek to the pristine waters of Eaton Lake. This hike is a steep grind, climbing uphill at a constant rate for an elevation gain of 3199ft. As such, hikers should wear proper hiking footwear and bring any necessary gear such as snowshoes, crampons, or microspikes in order to traverse the steep trail in early/late season conditions. Hikers should also note that there are several bridge crossings along this route, the last of which is in fairly rough shape. For an easier (and safer) way to cross the creek, utilize the rocky section of the creekbed just above the bridge, as it will provide more stable footing.

This hiking route is perfect for a hot summer day as the trail is largely blanketed with dense tree cover and the lake offers the opportunity to cool off with a swim in its refreshing waters. Although the hike doesn’t offer much in terms of views for most of the trail, you will be able to make your way through a beautiful stretch of forest, visit a majestic waterfall, and take in the picturesque sights and crystal clear water of Eaton Lake.

Setting out on the trail, begin the long uphill climb through the forest as you leave Silverhope Creek behind you. The trail will wind uphill through the forest at a steep grade, largely following the course of Eaton Creek, which you will have to cross several times along the journey. At roughly the halfway point, you will be able to take in the majestic beauty of a cascading waterfall before continuing on towards the lake. As mentioned, the final bridge crossing before Eaton Lake is a bit sketchy, so either take caution when making your way across or utilize the rocky creekbed to get to the other side.

Arriving at Eaton Lake, you will be greeted with picturesque views over the mirror-like surface of the lake reflecting the image of Eaton Peak and Mount Grant towering above. After taking in the views, exploring the area around the lake, and going for a refreshing swim; head back down the same trail to return to your car having completed the Eaton Lake Trail.
