Route Description for Shunda Mountain Hike (Baldy Lookout)

The Shunda Mountain trail to the Baldy Lookout is short and steep, but not technical at all. You will find the views from the top very rewarding and you will quickly understand why Shunda Mountain was chosen as a fire lookout. The main thing you need to be aware of is the weather: the heat during the summer (no shade on top), the mud after the rain (on worse days the road to the trailhead might be too challenging for some vehicles) and occasional strong winds.

After parking your car, continue past the gate. Getting lost might be hard even on purpose, as you only need to follow the straight wide fire road up to the mountain in front of you.

Soon you will emerge from the woods and the view to the Baldy Lookout will open up. Continue all the way to the top!

At the top, enjoy the views of the surrounding mountains and flatlands. The closest peak to you is Coliseum Mountain, then – Eagle Ridge and Eagle Mountain, then even further – Ram Mountain, followed by numerous other stunning peaks in the distance.

Continue back down the same way you came up.

Insider Hints

  • Take lots of water with you, as there’s no shade to hide from the sun on hot summer days.

  • You can hike this trail during the winter too, but strong winds are common during this time of the year.
