Hiking to Crescent Falls won’t take very long, but you’ll probably want to stay awhile. With its magnificent viewpoint, it's a must-do in the David Thompson region. The nearby campground makes for the perfect basecamp when exploring the area. The trail will take you straight to the falls and back. Although rocky and rooty in some spots, this trail is accessible to all abilities.
Getting there
From Nordegg, Alberta, join Highway 11 westbound for 11.2mi before turning right for Crescent Falls at the signed road. Continue along the road for 2.5mi before turning left into the Crescent Falls trailhead area.

The hike to Crescent Falls is one of the most popular stops in the region, and its proximity to the Crescent Falls campground brings lots of traffic. Despite being a short trail, unfortunately, it’s not accessible for those in wheelchairs. If you want to bring your small children, you’ll be fine if your stroller can handle some rough terrain.
Crescent Falls is a landmark of the region and a must-do. Popular places are busy for a reason, and you’ll find out why this trail is on the list when you catch a glimpse of the falls. Visit this area early or late in the day if you are looking for a quieter experience.
You will find a clearly signed trailhead from the parking area that denotes the beginning of the Crescent Falls Trail. Various trails in the area link to a few different waterfalls. You can choose the longer path leading to another set of tiered waterfalls. The shorter trail leads to the impressive falls and remains a low-effort, high-reward trip. Make your way along the canyon’s edge, admiring the scenery of the deep gorge, Bighorn Canyon. You’ll be able to see the Bighorn River as you make your way to the falls.
After 656ft, take the trail to the right at the junction. The trail on the left leads up the canyon for a longer hike. Once on the trail leading to the right, you will gain proximity to the river and the falls. Hike another 492ft to the remarkable views over the falls. Return the way you came, taking the left trail at the junction to return to the parking area. If you feel more adventurous, take the trail to the right and head up the gorge for some more impressive falls.
