Coliseum Mountain Hike

The trail up Coliseum Mountain is a lovely route to the beautiful peak, with great views of the surrounding area from Nordegg village to the Rocky Mountains. This route, not being technical at all, is quite popular (especially among people with dogs) so don’t expect to be alone. Coliseum Mountain and its surrounding areas sometimes get quite windy, so don’t forget to dress accordingly!

There are several trails to reach the top, but we prefer the official path. Either way, whichever route you decide to take, it’s hard to get lost here and you should end up on top of Coliseum Mountain.

From the parking lot, take the path heading to the Coliseum Mountain Trail. The path will look quite easy here and you will emerge from the forest.

After crossing the creek, you will start ascending. Continue pushing forward and the route will start switchbacking.

Continue your hike and after a while, you will notice the forest surrounding you thinning out. The views will get truly beautiful.

Once you step out of the last switchback, you will find yourself on the lower east summit of the Coliseum Mountain. From here, continue along the ridge between two summits. Most hikers find this part of the hike to be the highlight of the day!

Continue straight until you reach an old fire-lookout, that’s the top of the Coliseum Mountain. Spend some time here, as there is plenty of space.

Return the same way you came.
