Difficulty Rating:
The trail to the top of Coliseum Mountain is one of the most popular hikes in the surrounding area. Not only does it have beautiful views of the surrounding Canadian Rocky Mountains, but of the Nordegg hamlet as well. Although we recommend hiking during the warm months of the year, this scramble is available all year round and is quite popular among snowshoers.
Getting there
To reach the trailhead at the northern subdivision of Nordegg, from David Thompson Hwy take turn to Shunda Road, then take turn to Baldy Road, then – Eagle Road. Drive until the end of the road.

Route Description for Coliseum Mountain Hike
The trail up Coliseum Mountain is a lovely route to the beautiful peak, with great views of the surrounding area from Nordegg village to the Rocky Mountains. This route, not being technical at all, is quite popular (especially among people with dogs) so don’t expect to be alone. Coliseum Mountain and its surrounding areas sometimes get quite windy, so don’t forget to dress accordingly!
There are several trails to reach the top, but we prefer the official path. Either way, whichever route you decide to take, it’s hard to get lost here and you should end up on top of Coliseum Mountain.
From the parking lot, take the path heading to the Coliseum Mountain Trail. The path will look quite easy here and you will emerge from the forest.
After crossing the creek, you will start ascending. Continue pushing forward and the route will start switchbacking.
Continue your hike and after a while, you will notice the forest surrounding you thinning out. The views will get truly beautiful.
Once you step out of the last switchback, you will find yourself on the lower east summit of the Coliseum Mountain. From here, continue along the ridge between two summits. Most hikers find this part of the hike to be the highlight of the day!
Continue straight until you reach an old fire-lookout, that’s the top of the Coliseum Mountain. Spend some time here, as there is plenty of space.
Return the same way you came.
Insider Hints
It’s possible to hike the Coliseum Mountain route as a loop, but we suggest against this idea, as the descent of this trail is quite steep, slippery and might get dangerous. Hard-to-find as well!
Sometimes the trail gets windy – come prepared.
