The Richmond River Swale Circular Walk is a lovely adventure on the edge of Yorkshire Dales National Park that passes through a peaceful riverside setting. While out on the walk, you will follow along the winding banks of the River Swale before climbing uphill in the forest to pass through the village of Hudswell. This is a great route to take when you are looking for a leisurely weekend stroll with little difficulty.

Getting there

To reach the trailhead for the Richmond River Swale Circular Walk from the Richmondshire Museum, head northwest on Ryders Wynd for 250ft and continue straight through the roundabout for 463ft. Make a left of Rosemary Lane and follow it for 243ft, bearing slightly right onto Newbiggin for another 167ft. Turn left on Bargate and follow it for 0.1mi, before continuing straight on Bridge Street. In 400ft, you will find roadside parking near the trailhead.

Richmond River Swale Circular Walk Description

Walking the Richmond River Swale Circular Trail is a fun activity along the border of the Yorkshire Dales, as it will lead you through some easy to traverse riverside terrain that is suitable for nearly every age and skill level. There is one uphill climb through the forest around the midway point of the walk, but there are some steps to help you make your way up the hillside.

After following along the picturesque banks of the River Swale and making your way up the steps through the forest, you will pass through the charming village of Hudswell and follow the quiet country road back into Richmond, crossing over the historic Richmond Bridge to arrive back at the trailhead.
