The Old Gang Smelt Mill and Reeth High Moor Walk is a rough and rugged adventure that will take you to an historic site while showcasing the beautiful views across Yorkshire Dales National Park. While out on the trail, you will climb uphill across the exposed terrain of the moor to visit the remnants of what was once the largest lead smelting complex in the Yorkshire Dales. This route is exposed to the elements, so make sure that you come prepared with proper clothing and gear to deal with inclement weather.

Getting there

To reach the trailhead for the Old Gang Smelt Mill and Reeth High Moor Walk from Reeth, head west on Silver Street for 1.4mi and make a right turn onto High Lane, following it for 0.1mi. Continue straight onto Morley Gate and follow it for 1.8mi to arrive at the car park.

Old Gang Smelt Mill and Reeth High Moor Walk Description

Featuring an interesting historical site and sweeping views across the Yorkshire Dales, the Old Gang Smelt mill and Reeth High Moor is a great excursion to experience some of the natural beauty and history within the park. As mentioned above, this trail is exposed to the elements, so be sure to wear clothing that is appropriate for the conditions. There are also some long and steady climbs along the route, making sturdy walking boots a must.

Setting out from the trailhead, you will make your way to the northwest alongside Hard Level Gill, following along the edge of the water as it climbs gradually uphill past the Old Gang Smelt Mill. Continuing further uphill, you will pass by Hard Level Force and pass Level House Bridge, following the trail as it eventually turns to the northeast to summit Great Pinseat.

From this elevated position along the moor, you will enjoy some stunning views that sweep across the Yorkshire Dales. From the summit, make your way to the southeast to begin your descent of the hillside, traversing the rugged terrain of the moor to eventually arrive back at the edge of the road. Turn right here and follow the road back towards the car park where you began your walk.
