Walking the Malham Cove and Gordale Scar Circular Trail is a great activity that features several unique natural highlights along the length of the trail. Setting out from Malham, you will work your way uphill across the moor and loop around the east to visit the impressive limestone formations of Malham Cove and Gordale Scar before passing by the charming Janet’s Foss waterfall. This walk will require a bit of effort, but the views will absolutely be worth it!

Getting there

To reach the trailhead for the Malham Cove and Gordale Scar Circular Walk from nearby Settle, head to the east for 13.0mi on High Hill Lane and make a left turn onto lack Gill Lane. After 1.6mi, turn left on Grains Lane and follow it for 3.1mi, making a left to arrive at the car park.

Malham Cove and Gordale Scar Circular Walk Description

A popular walk in Yorkshire Dales National Park, the Malham Cove and Gordale Scar Circular Trail will certainly give you a solid leg workout, as you traverse the moor for just over 1640ft of total elevation gain on the way to visit several imposing rock formations.

While it may not be suitable for the entire family, this is a fantastic walk that can be undertaken by a variety of outdoor enthusiasts. After making your way uphill to the northwest across the rugged terrain of the moor, you will head to the east to pass by the horseshoe-shaped limestone wall known as Malham Cove for some stunning views over the surrounding landscape.

After making your way downhill, you will traverse a dramatic limestone ravine known as Gordale Scar, before walking to the tranquil site of the Janet’s Foss Waterfall. With the end of the walk within grasp, you will follow along the banks of Gordale beck before turning north to return to Malham.
