The Mount Stephen Quarry Hike is a fantastic adventure filled with stunning views of Yoho National Park and the chance to see some unique fossils. The trail sets out from the town of Field and climbs uphill along the slopes of Mount Stephen, passing a large deposit of trilobite and tube worm fossils before arriving at the summit viewpoint. Guided tours are available if you want to learn more about the unique geology of the area.

Getting there

To reach the Mount Stephen Quarry trailhead from Golden, head south on BC-1E for 33.9mi and turn right onto Field Access Road. After 623ft, turn left onto E 2nd Street, following it for 886ft and continuing straight onto Kicking Horse Avenue. After 558ft, turn left onto E 1st Street, and you will arrive at the trailhead in 558ft.

Mount Stephen Quarry Hike Description

The Mount Stephen Quarry Hike takes you on an exciting outdoor experience in Yoho Provincial Park that will lead you uphill along a challenging route for some breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. The trail sets out from the town of Field and climbs uphill along the lower slopes of the mountains, passing by a series of shale beds that are home to a large number of trilobite and tube worm fossils. This area can only be explored with a guide, so be sure to book one if you are interested in exploring the geological past of the region. After passing the fossil deposits, continue uphill to the summit of Mount Stephen, where you will experience some stunning views of nearby peaks like Mount Burgess and Mount Field, as well as the rushing waters of the Kicking Horse River in the valley below. After taking in the sights, head downhill along the same path to return to the trailhead.
