Big Creek Railroad Grade Trail Description

Hiking the Big Creek Railroad Grade Trail is a memorable experience. Wander the shared route amongst several other outdoor adventurers, enjoying views of the High Sierra and the sounds of the gurgling snow-melt streams. This undulating path weaves through both exposed and shaded terrain, so we suggest dressing in layers and wearing sun protection! Don’t forget to charge your camera; the scenery along this route is picture perfect!

Your journey along the Big Creek Railroad Grade Trail begins from the trailhead off Huntington Lake Road. From here, the path tracks southwest into the forestlands. Gradually climbing, the path will expose views of the area’s mountainous landscape through the tree breaks. Enjoy the views of the High Sierra and be mindful of passers-by as you trek. Eventually, you will cross over Balsam Creek, which provides sights of a charming snow-melt cascade in the spring. Following the path west, you will eventually reach an intersection with Huntington Lake Road.

We stopped just short of the road, but if you still have some energy left in the reserves, you can further cross the road and explore the Big Creek Railroad Grade Trail. If not, simply retrace your footing along the path all the way back to the trailhead.
