If you are after a great summit challenge in the San Juan Mountains that isn’t overly long and features stunning alpine views, then you will want to explore the trails along the Coal Bank Pass to Engineer Mountain Summit Hike.

Setting out from the parking area, you will follow the trail as it initially heads to the northeast, before turning to the northwest to climb through the woodland landscape. After working your way uphill, you will break free of the tree cover and traverse a beautifully scenic alpine meadow on the approach to Engineer Mountain.

Here, the terrain will become more rough and rugged, at times requiring you to scramble over rocky surfaces to gain elevation up the mountainside. After the final steep push up to the summit, you will enjoy gorgeous views that extend out across the San Juan Mountains in every direction. Once you have taken in the views, carefully descend the summit and make your way back along the same route to return to the trailhead.
