The Blue Lakes Pass via Yankee Boy Basin hike is a tough, yet beautifully scenic adventure that will produce some exceptional views of the San Juan Mountains. While out on the trail, you will make your way uphill through the basin while taking in the views of the imposing Mount Sneffels, before reaching the pass as it sits perched above the Blue Lakes. Hikers should take note that the trailhead for this hike can only be accessed with a 4x4 high clearance vehicle. If you do not have one you will need to park further down the road and tack on the extra distance.

For those adventurers looking for a challenging route in the San Juan Mountains that isn’t overly long but still offers jaw-dropping views, the Blue Lakes Pass via Yankee Boy Basin Hike will be the perfect route to check out.

Setting out from the trailhead, you will head to the northwest along the road as it cuts through the picturesque alpine landscape. At the Wrights Lake Trailhead, you will branch off to the left and climb uphill along Sneffels Creek until you arrive at the shores of the charming lake.

From here, you will skirt around the water’s edge and continue working you way uphill to the northwest below the imposing formation known as Mount Sneffels, eventually arriving at the top of Blue Lakes Pass. Take some time here to enjoy the stunning views that sweep across the alpine landscape, before heading back down the same trail on the return into the trailhead.
