Red Butte Canyon Overlook Trail Description

The Red Butte Canyon Overlook Trail is an easy hike that is fun for the whole family. This trail is dog-friendly; however, dogs must be kept on leash at all times. The Red Butte Canyon Overlook Trail does not get a lot of shade so be sure to lather on the sunscreen, pop on a sunhat and pack a water bottle for your hike. If you are hiking in the summer, we recommend heading out on this route early in the morning to beat the heat. Alternatively, you can save this trail for an evening stroll to wind down after a day exploring Salt Lake City.

The Red Butte Canyon Overlook Trail is also a fantastic spot to see wildlife such as deer, elk, and songbirds. If you are lucky enough to catch sight of wildlife, do not feed them and be sure to give them lots of personal space.

From the parking area on Red Butte Canyon Road, pass the gate and follow the gravel road northeast as it runs parallel to Red Butte Creek. When you come to the next boundary gate, take the trail on your left then quickly take another left to begin the loop back south. Stay right for the next half mile before cutting east to complete the loop. Soon you’ll find yourself back where you began.
