Bull Creek Flats Trail Description

Immerse yourself in a sea of towering conifers along the Bull Creek Flats Trail. Explore the scenic alluvial-flat redwood grove whilst marveling at the natural beauty and grandeur of this delicate environment. Compared to other redwood groves in the state, this one is severely underrated. The trails along the south side of Bull Creek generally see more traffic, whereas the north side is relatively unfrequented—likely due to the audible traffic noise. These routes are connected by the seasonal Big Trees Area Footbridge in the summer months. Though often successful and easy, crossing the creek by foot when the bridge is out is discouraged, notably in the spring.

The natural beauty exhibited along the Bull Creek Flats Hike is unparalleled. Wander along the trail reminiscent of a fairy-tale, and you will be overwhelmed by the inspiring sights of the redwoods, mushrooms, wildflowers, and the gurgling stream that distinguish the redwood grove. This route enables hikers to explore both Rockefeller Grove and Big Trees Grove, which offer a diverse experience but are equally scenic. As you wander through the impressively tall forests, you will be granted the time to reconnect with nature and disconnect from the real world. Take this moment to appreciate the beauty of our natural world as the fresh air fills your lungs.

Your journey along the Bull Creek Flats Loop begins from the trailhead at the Blue Slide Day Use Area. Setting out from here, hikers will follow the Bull Creek Trail North eastwardly. This section of the route boasts a more secluded experience, yet your magical nature walk will be interrupted by the sound of traffic. Try and focus on the sounds of the gurgling creek, and soon enough, the path will divert south, away from the roadway. Leading you into the Upper Bull Creek Flat and Lower Bull Creek Flat. Revel in the grandeur of the looming conifers, and soon you will enter into the forest primeval—the largest old-growth redwood forest remaining in the world!

At the next junction, veer south, walking through the magnificent Rockefeller Grove. Admire the enormity of the trees, then cross over Bull Creek and up a segment of steep terrain. Following the navigation of switchbacks, veer right, and you will be diverted onto the Bull Creek Trail South. Admire the lush huckleberry bushes and keep an eye out for wild mushrooms. Intersecting several streams, you will be guided through Bull Creek Flat and Big Tree Grove. Continuing along the Bull Creek Trail South, you will ultimately be delivered back to the trailhead, marking the end of your adventure.
