While out walking the trail, you will pass by the remnants of a Roman auxiliary fort dating back to 124 CE, before continuing along Hadrian’s Wall and into Walwick. Whether you are simply out for a fun weekend stroll or are hoping to learn more about the Roman occupation of Britain, the Housesteads Fort and Hadrian’s Wall Walk is an excellent adventure that will expose you to the natural beauty and rich history of Northumberland.

Setting out from the car park, you will initially make your way uphill to the northwest to reach the Housesteads Roman Fort. The remnants of this stone fortification date back to 124 CE and the site was used to house troops along Hadrian’s Wall, which protected the edge of the empire and was constructed around the same time.

Following the trail to the northeast, you will pass by the shores of Bromlee Lough and continue along Hadrian’s Wall, stopping off at a number of different locations including the Temple of Mithras and the Brocolitia Fort. Eventually, this route will bring you into the endpoint of the walk in Walwick, where you can either wait for your ride or take public transit back to the trailhead.
