Tarset Bastle Trail

Although this walking route largely follows along quiet country roads, the Tarset Bastle Trail is still an exceptional journey across Northumberland that will reveal some beautiful scenery and fascinating historical sites.

Setting out from the trailhead in the village of Greenhaugh, you will make your way to the northwest along the road, enjoying the beautiful views of the surrounding farmland and rolling hills. Eventually, you will pass by the Black Middens Bastle House, one of a series of fortified farms that were utilized in the defence of Northern England.

Continuing to the northwest, you will pass by two similar fortifications at Shilla Hill and Bog Head, before looping around to the southeast. Here, you will traverse a variety of terrain along the banks of Tarset Burn, including open fields and dense forests, before arriving back in the village of Greenhaugh where you began.
