The Pickering Woods Walk is a nice and easy walking route along the southern edge of North York Moors National Park that will expose you to some lovely woodland terrain and historical sites. While out on the trail, you will make your way through Pickering and pass by the 12th Century Pickering Castle before looping through the woodlands alongside the banks of Pickering Beck. While this route features largely flat terrain, the dirt paths can become quite muddy and will require proper walking boots in order to traverse.

Getting there

To get to the trailhead for the Pickering Woods Walk from Scarborough, head west along Stepney Road/A170 for 3.0mi and take the second exit at the roundabout onto Main Street/A170, following it for another 12.8mi. Keep straight onto Hungate for 0.2mi and turn left onto Vivis Lane. You will find the car park on the right in 350ft.

Featuring easy to navigate and traverse terrain that is just a stone’s throw away from the city, the Pickering Woods Walk is a fantastic route for nearly every age and skill level. Beautiful woodland settings, winding streams, and fascinating historical monuments await on this fun journey within the North York Moors.

Setting out from the car park, you will make your way to the northeast through the bustling market town of Pickering, checking out the shops and restaurants before working your way past the historic 12th Century Pickering Castle.

From here, you will follow along the winding banks of Pickering Beck, as they lead you through the tranquil atmosphere of the forest. Take some time to appreciate the peaceful nature of the landscape here, before heading north to cross over the water and a rail line. Continue on to the southwest, working your way along the opposite bank of the beck until you arrive back in Pickering.
