The Great Broughton and The Wainstones Walk is a fun - and at times challenging - walk in the North York Moors that features a good variety of terrain and scenic views. Along the trail, you will make your way up a steep incline and traverse the northern tip of Cold Moor before visiting the rocky sandstone outcrop of the Wainstones and descending back into Great Broughton. Make sure to wear sturdy walking boots for this rugged adventure, and don’t forget the camera!

Great Broughton and The Wainstones Walk Description

If you are looking for a fun walking route that isn’t overly long, has a good variety of terrain, scenic views, and interesting geological features, then the Great Broughton and The Wainstones Walk will be the perfect route for your next weekend adventure.

Setting out from The Bay Horse in Great Broughton, you will head to the south along Holme Beck and traverse the open countryside, working your way through the fields until you arrive at the base of the hillside. From here, you will begin the steep climb uphill that will take you over the north end of Cold Moor for some stunning views over the North York Moors.

Continuing on to the east, you will climb further uphill and pass by the sandstone outcrops of The Wainstones, traversing the summit of Hasty Bank before heading down towards the foot of the hill. Skirting along the base to the northwest, you will eventually turn more directly to the north and cut back across the countryside on the way into Great Broughton, where you can stop back in at The Bay Horse for a quick pint.
