Treasure Lakes Trail Decription

Although not an incredibly difficult route, the Treasure Lakes Trail length and elevation incline likely make it not appropriate for families with young children and beginner hikes. Likewise, depending on the time of year that you visit, the mosquitoes along the route can become rather prolific and bothersome.

An incredibly scenic route, Treasure Lakes Trail is among the most beautiful trails within Inyo National Forest. Along the route, stunning views of the eastern Sierra Nevada mountain range can be enjoyed, as the imposing peaks make one feel insignificant in comparison to their grandeur. The tranquil turquoise lakes and lush greenery of the forest complement the beauty of the mountain range – creating a magical setting.

Having arrived at the trailhead, follow Bishop Pass Trail south alongside South Lake. The trail will steadily incline in elevation as it begins to veer away from the shore of South Lake, and up the highlands in the foreground. After crossing a number of small streams, Bishop Pass Trail will arrive at a junction, where you are to follow the southern pathway onto Treasure Lakes Trail.

With Hurd Peak visible ahead of you, continue on along Treasure Lakes Trail as it makes its way southeast, passing a number of streams as it goes. While continuing to steadily incline in elevation, the trail will then veer sharply to the east for a short distance before heading directly south. After a switchback section, the trail will deliver you to the Treasure Lakes where you should take your time and enjoy the incredible views before backtracking your steps towards the trailhead.

Trail Highlights

Hurd Peak

Visible for the majority of the Treasure Lakes Trail, Hurd Peak humbly watches over you as you traverse the route. A stunning mountain standing at 12237ft tall, Hurd Peak attracts people from all over the world who come to summit its technical peak. Named after Hurd Clarence – a civil engineer and mountaineer who first summited the peak in 1906 – Hurd Peaks stands as one of the most beautiful mountains within the region.
