Rainbow Falls via Devils Postpile Trail Description

As Rainbow Falls via Devils Postpile Trail is a popular route, it can become rather crowded depending on the time of year you choose to visit. Due to this, we recommend starting Rainbow Falls via Devils Postpile Trail earlier in the morning to avoid the larger crowds that often accumulate midday.

The Rainbow Falls via Devils Postpile Trail is an excellent trail simply because of how beautiful and accessible it is. Traversing alongside stunning and unique rock formations before ending at the tranquil Rainbow Falls ensures no shortage of scenery can be enjoyed throughout the route, while its relatively short distance and easy access make it appropriate for all skill levels and families with young children.

Having arrived at the trailhead, follow Devils Postpile Trail south alongside Soda Springs Meadow. After passing the meadow, stay south on Devils Postpile Trail, making sure not to follow any veering pathways at any of the various junction points along the trail. Soon the route will pass over a stream and the elevation will begin to steadily incline.

After passing over a second stream, the trail will begin to head southeast as it reaches a short plateau. The Rainbow Falls via Devils Postpile Trail will then bring you over one last creek before the elevation begins to incline again. Once you have completed the incline, you will arrive at the Middle Fork San Joaquin River, where incredible sightlines of the magnificent Rainbow Falls can be admired. Take this opportunity to enjoy the sights and take a rest before backtracking your steps towards the trailhead.

Trail Highlights

Rainbow Falls

A stunningly beautiful waterfall, Rainbow Falls draws people from far and wide who come to admire its grandeur. A 98ft drop, Rainbow Falls is located along the Middle Fork San Joaquin River and is named after the rainbow that appears when the sun hits the mist coming off it. Spring is considered to be the best time to see Rainbow Falls, as the runoff from snowmelt increases its scale exponentially.
