Chocolate Lakes Loop Trail Description

The Chocolate Lakes Loop Trail’s fairly long distance and large incline likely make it not appropriate for beginner hikers and families with young children. Likewise, the weather throughout the route’s environment can change rapidly, so we suggest bringing extra clothing so you can layer as necessary.

With your vehicle parked at the South Lake Picnic Area, follow the Bishops Pass Trail as it makes its way south along South Lake. After crossing a stream, the pathway will deviate east from the lakeshore and begin to incline in elevation rapidly. The Chocolate Lakes Loop Trail will then arrive at a junction, where you are to follow the Bishop Pass Trail to the east.

Continuing on your eastern heading, the terrain will incline steadily as you reach another junction. At the junction, take the southern pathway towards Chocolate Peak in the foreground. You will soon arrive at a fork in the trail, where going either direction will circumvent Chocolate Peak and deliver you back to where you’re standing. Once you have completed the circuit around Chocolate Peak, backtrack your steps towards the trailhead, and your waiting vehicle.
