If you enjoy wooded hiking trails, then you will love the Skyscraper Reservoir via Woodland Trail. Hike through lush aspen forests, past waterfalls and grazing moose before the trail opens up to the Skyscraper Reservoir. Don’t get us wrong, you will still get stunning views of the craggy peaks from the reservoir, but the majority of this trail traverses through the woodlands.

The Skyscraper Reservoir via Woodland Trail hike begins at the Hessie Trailhead off the Fourth of July Road.

Skyscraper Reservoir via Woodland Trail Description
The Skyscraper Reservoir via Woodland Trail is a forested trail that leads up to the reservoir. This trail is almost all shaded as it progresses through the woods and past a few meadows. There are several intersections along the hike, but they are all explicitly marked. Note that moose frequent around this area. Ensure to give them plenty of space if you encounter any. The Hessie Trailhead parking lot fills up super-fast and parking is limited. Consider taking the RTD free shuttle from the town of Nederland to avoid the hassle of finding parking.
Begin this hike on the Devil’s Thumb Bypass Trail which departs from the Hessie Trailhead. Continue along this trail until you meet an intersection. Bear left onto the Devil’s Thumb Trail. Shortly after turning there will be a connecting trail on the left, continu straightforward on this path. The trail will once again encounter a junction, stay right on the Devil’s Thumb Trail. You will continuously gain elevation as you ascend the forested path. At the next fork in the road, turn left onto Woodland Lake Trail. Head west along the trial as it becomes increasingly exposed. Pass the Woodland Lake before ascending the rocky ridge to the Skyscraper Reservoir.
Enjoy the sights from the reservoir before retracing your steps back to the parking lot.
