Huckleberry Mountain Lookout Trail Description

The Huckleberry Mountain Lookout is swarmed in the summer months by huckleberries, and while these are a great snack for hikers, they also draw some large furry friends:bears. When hiking Huckleberry, ensure that you have packed bear spray and make noise along the trail to alert any lingering bears of your presence, so you do not startle them.

Huckleberry Mountain Lookout is still used by the National Park Service to monitor forest fire activity, so you can imagine how far these views stretch. The first portion of the hike is quite dense, and you will mostly be walking in the forest; however, you will catch glimpses of the sights to come here and there. At 0.3mi, you will have to cross over McGee Creek, and this will be your only water source going forward. 4.0mi into the hike you will face elevations of 2000ft, and you will reach a pass. Keep walking towards the lookout as you will be able to see it in the distance from here.

In the last 2.0mi, until you reach Huckleberry Mountain Lookout, the views will be incredible. On a clear day, you will be able to see Longfellow Peak, Paul Bunyan’s cabin, Mt. Saint Nick, and the Great Northern. Return from the lookout by following the path in which you came.
