Marmot Passage Hike Description

The Marmot Passage Hike is a charming adventure through the network of trails in the Staunton State Park. Hike through the grassy plains, through aspen groves, and up a rocky ridge all while enjoying the expansive mountainous scenery. This excursion does not play around. Revel in the diversity of the landscapes and get your daily steps in as you make your way along the Marmot Passage Trail. Note that there have been bears and mountain lions spotted in the area, if you see them, stay calm and give them plenty of space. Check out our blog post on bear safety if you want to brush up on some tips! Note that visitors are required to purchase a $10USD pass to access the park.

Begin your Marmot Passage Hike from the Staunton Ranch Trailhead. Take the Staunton Ranch Trail northwest along the base of the towering craggy cliffs. Soon you will encounter an intersection. Turn left and you will be diverted onto the Scout Line Trail. Navigate a set of switchbacks up a rocky ridge. Trek this route until you meet a junction with the Marmot Passage Trail. Take the trail west to the Elk Falls Pond. Enjoy the scenery of the pond and waterfall in the foreground of the mountainous landscape.

From the pond, the path will merge onto the Bugling Elk Trail. Hike north along this route and at the next fork in the road, keep right. Hike the Bugling Elk Trail east and it will merge onto a service road. Hike the service road, noticing rock climbers on your left. Soon the route will reconnect with the Staunton Ranch Trail. Retrace your steps along this path back to the trailhead.
