Strawberry Crater Wilderness Trail Description

Northern Arizona, particularly the Flagstaff area, has a fascinating volcanic past. Remnants of this past are evident in the volcanic rocks, craters, and volcanic mountains that define the area. The Strawberry Crater Wilderness Trail explores one volcanic area on a route that’s easy enough for all skill levels. This route loops up and around a small volcanic crater.

There is very little traffic on this route, so we recommend downloading a GPS track just to make sure you don’t end up off-trail. Additionally, there’s very little shade on this route, so bring water. Because of the rough nature of volcanic rock, sturdy boots are recommended.

From the trailhead, hike a few steps towards the crater, then keep right where the trail forks. Look for the path that climbs up the crater, then across into the bowl. Descend through the bowl and then head up and around the other side of the crater. This will get you back to the trailhead.
