Mars Hill Loop Description

The Mars Hill Loop is a relaxing hike in every sense of the word. This trail takes you through a ponderosa pine forest that really helps you disconnect from your everyday life. A bit of fresh air goes a long way! The viewpoints aren’t as huge as other hikes nearby, but the serene nature of the trail is definitely worth it. This is a moderate hike that’s suitable for active younger families.

Although the Mars Hill Loop is fairly quick and easy, you can make use of the trails atop the mesa to DIY a longer adventure. You can connect with Karen Cooper Trail (Rio North Trail) or pick up the Tunnel Springs Trail. Watch for mountain bikes as you go.

From the trailhead, cross N Thorpe Road and pick up the Mars Hill Loop. Head into the forest. There’s a bit of elevation gain required in this first part of the hike, but it’s not very aggressive. You’ll be heading up a cleft in the side of the mesa. Go straight to the junction with Observatory Mesa Trail, where you’ll turn left and then left again onto Mars Hill Trail. This will connect you back to the main trail, from where you can retrace your steps to the trailhead.
