Lussier Hot Springs

The Lussier Hot Springs Trail doesn’t really offer much in terms of a great climbing workout or breathtaking summit views; however, it does provide access to an amazing series of thermal pools along the Lussier River. Because of this, the trail sees a high amount of foot traffic along its short 0.3mi length. Make sure to arrive early enough to secure parking at the trailhead and snag a spot in one of the pools. Although it may seem a bit silly for the short nature of the trail, hikers should make sure to bring bear spray along on their walk. Black bears are sometimes spotted along the road, and in the vicinity of the parking area, so it couldn’t hurt to err on the side of caution.

While this route may only be a short jaunt to reach the warm comfort of the hot springs, it still offers some amazing scenery that includes the natural beauty of the surrounding forest, the picturesque shores of the Lussier River, and views of the wooded slopes of nearby mountains. In addition to this, the trail is only a few kilometres away from the emerald waters of Alces and Whiteswan lakes, allowing for endless possibilities on a fun day of outdoor adventuring.

Located just off of Whiteswan Lake Forest Service Road, the parking area next to the trailhead can be spotted by a big, wooden BC Parks sign and also features washroom facilities. Setting out on the trail, hikers will head to the south through the trees along a gravel path down to the edge of the river. This descent is made along a very gentle grade, making the route accessible for hikers of all skill levels.

As you walk along the forested trail, you will have an amazing view looking down onto the flowing waters of the Lussier River and the heavily wooded slopes that dramatically frame the landscape. Along the edge of the river, you will be able to spot the rocky outline of the thermal pools and, if you arrive early enough, you might even have your pick of the bunch.

Take some time to explore the rocky shores of the river before settling into a hot spring of your choosing for a relaxing soak in this serene setting. With the blue sky above and the cool air swirling around in direct contrast to the hot water of the springs, you will be able to fully check out and reconnect with nature before the crowds of people arrive.

Once you have spent enough time in the relaxing water of the thermal pools and have taken in the amazing scenery of the surrounding landscape, gather your belongings and head back along the trail to make the brief climb up to the parking area.

Lussier Hot Springs

The Lussier Hot Springs are an undeveloped hot spring within Whiteswan Lake Provincial Park and are a popular destination for outdoorsy people looking for a quick soak in a serene forest setting. Located on traditional Ktunaxa territory, the hot springs were historically used by trappers, prospectors, and guides in the area during the 20th century. The warmest pool within the hot springs can reach 43℃, with the temperature dropping off at each successive pool until the water reaches the Lussier River.

Located within the Kootenay Ranges of mountains, Whiteswan Lake Provincial Park is a popular destination for all types of outdoor activities, including camping and hiking. Established in 1978, the park features 5 different campgrounds, Alces and Whiteswan lakes, and the Lussier Hot Springs.
