The Crane Flat Lookout is an easy-going hike that is a must add to your Yosemite itinerary. Wander the old fire road lined with mixed conifers up to the scenic overlook and historic fire tower. History buffs and outdoor enthusiasts alike will enjoy this trek! Note: if you are attempting this venture in the winter months, we strongly encourage the use of snowshoes or microspikes! Don’t forget to charge your camera, as the beauty of the mountain scenery is unparalleled and warrants countless photo opportunities. The National Park charges an entrance fee; check out the NPS website for additional details.
Setting out from the Big Oak Flat Road, the Crane Flat Hike follows the Crane Flat Fire Road. Follow this path through the mixed pine forests and revel in the grandeur of the towering pines. Heading northwest, the path will gradually climb and will ultimately deliver you to the Crane Flat Fire Lookout.
Take your time exploring the grounds of the historic fire lookout and you will be transported back to a time when rangers used to sit and supervise the verdant forests below. Admire the scene of the snow-capped Sierra Nevada Mountains that flank the lush woodlands. After appreciating the panoramas, retrace your footing down the path back to the trailhead.
