Grizzly Lake Hike Description
Reserved for experienced hikers and intrepid spirits, this hike demands endurance and proper preparation. Traveling into the high country, hikers must be mindful of extreme conditions. Dress in layers and check the forecast prior to departure. Additionally, though this route is accessible year-round, winter excursions pose inherent dangers, so make sure you are properly equipped! If you are tacking this hike in one day, make sure to head out before dawn to make sure you make it back to the trailhead in time. Though demanding, the picture-perfect, crystalline alpine lake at the trail’s end is all worth it.
Setting out from the China Gulch Trailhead, the Grizzly Lake Hike follows the China Springs Trail south, over China Gulch and beneath the sparse tree shade of looming conifers. This path will gradually climb before summiting a divide and plunging down into the canyon of Grizzly Creek. Here you will encounter an intersection, veer left, and you will be diverted onto the Grizzly Creek Trail. This route will guide you east past the Low Gap Camp before redirecting south through the valley. Notice Grizzly Butte towering above as you begin your final push to the lake.
This section of the hike is the most strenuous but also most rewarding. Navigate the vertiginous terrain alongside the creek and the profile of Grizzly Falls. Marvel in the grandeur and beauty of the plunging cascade. After scrambling up the rocky terrain, you will reach Grizzly Lake, a picturesque alpine lake awaiting someone to jump in! Admire the beauty and blue hue of the water before beginning your return. When you are rested and rehydrated, retrace your footing along the route, all the way back to the trailhead.
