Old-New Heart Trail Loop Description
The Old-New Heart Loop is a beautiful hike that travels below the base of Little Elden Mountain and Elden Mountain in Flagstaff. This scenic hike is suitable for intermediate hikers and better. It’s got some rocky, steep sections and can require a bit of route-finding in parts. Downloading your GPS track and wearing sturdy boots will help.
From the trailhead, take Sandy Seep Trail to the Arizona Trail, which will lead you to the fork that forms the base of the loop. Our route travels counterclockwise, which is considered to be easier. You’ll bear left at the fork and hike towards the base of the mountains.
Near the base, the route zig-zags through some rocky terrain before taking a right onto Near Heart Trail. Make sure you don’t accidentally take the switchbacks that head up to T-V Hill and Little Elden Mountain. This route will take you gradually downhill before weaving around a set of small hills and then back to the trail fork. From the fork, retrace your steps to the trailhead.
