The Kilburn Woods and White Horse Walk is a fantastic route in North York Moors National Park that will take you to stunning viewpoints and interesting monuments. While out walking the trail, you will walk along the rugged terrain of Roulston Scar, taking in stunning views of the Vale of York before visiting the impressive Kilburn White Horse that was carved into the chalky hillside in 1857. Although somewhat strenuous, this is a great walk for beginner and seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
Getting there
To get to the trailhead for the Kilburn Woods and White Horse Walk from nearby Thirsk, head east for 5.9mi along Sutton Road/A170 and turn left to enter the car park.

If you are after a bit of a challenge and beautifully scenic views while out on your next walking adventure in the North York Moors, then you will certainly want to explore the undulating terrain along the Kilburn Woods and White Horse Walk. This stunning adventure features gorgeous views looking out across the Vales of Mowbray and York, as well as the chance to check out the Kilburn White Horse – the largest and farthest north of England’s Hill carvings.
Setting out from the car park at the Sutton Bank visitor centre, make your way south along the edge of Roulston Scar and enjoy the spectacular views that look out across the picturesque landscape of the Vales of Mowbray and York. From here, you will descend the hillside and explore the tranquil forest atmosphere of Kilburn Woods, skirting around Hood Hill on the way to the Kilburn White Horse. After taking in the views of this magnificent chalk figure carved into the hillside, make your way uphill and follow the path north until you arrive back at the car park where you began.
