The Goathland and Grosmont Rail Path is a fantastic walking route in North York Moors National Park that utilizes an old railway line to take you between the two villages. While out on the trail, you will make your way through the picturesque Esk Valley, enjoying the laidback terrain that is mostly downhill. This is a one-way trail between the two villages; however, you can take the North York Moors Railway for a fun return journey on a heritage steam train that will eliminate the need to walk back uphill to Grosmont!
Getting there
To reach the trailhead for the Goathland and Grosmont Rail Path from Sleights, head south on Coach Road/A169 for 2.5mi and turn right onto Cow Wath Bank. Follow this for 2.1mi and make a sharp right to arrive at the car park.

Featuring mostly downhill terrain and lovely views across the picturesque Esk Valley, the Goathland and Grosmont Rail Path is a wonderful adventure that can be enjoyed by the entire family. As mentioned above, if you would rather not retrace your steps along the trail, you can always opt for a fun journey on the heritage steam engine that will allow you to experience the North York Moors Railway.
Setting out from the rail station in Goathland, you will make your way west through the village, turning to the northwest to cut across the open countryside and begin descending into the Eske Valley. Here, you will follow along the old railway line and take in the beautiful views across the valley, using the winding banks of Murk Esk as a guide to bring you into the trail’s end at Grosmont. Once there, you can explore the village before hopping aboard the train for the return leg.
