Lookout Point Trail Description

The Lookout Point Hike is a lovely adventure, and we know you will enjoy it just as much as we did! Located just off Hetch Hetchy Road, this is a great spontaneous hike to get out of the car, stretch your legs, and reward yourself with stunning vistas. Note that much of the trail is exposed, so we suggest heading out before noon to beat the heat. Additionally, the initial segment of the route wanders near the road, so you may hear some vehicle traffic. Don’t let this worry you, as the views and lush plantlife will distract you from the noise. The National Park charges a fee to access the trails; check out the NPS website for additional information.

Setting out from the trailhead at the Mather Ranger Station, the Lookout Point Hike follows the leftmost unmarked trail, heading east along the curves of Hetch Hetchy Road. Soon the path will curve northeast to divert you away from the road and into the lush wilderness. Wander along the path adorned with granite outcrops and you will begin your climb up to the overlook. Enjoy the scene of the sparse pines and wildflowers that line the path, keeping left at the next junction to quickly summit the rocky outcrop that boasts wonderful views of Hetch Hetchy.

Revel in the views of the reservoir, the numerous granite domes that decorate the landscape, and notice the odd tree burned from a previous wildfire. After enjoying the vista, retrace your steps along the path back to the trailhead.
