Whernside via Craven Way Description
If you are after a bit of a challenge and want to experience some of the most scenic views in all of Yorkshire Dales National Park, then you will certainly want to check out the Whernside via Craven Way Trail. While it may be a bit on the long side, the commanding view overlooking the undulating terrain surrounding you is nearly impossible to match anywhere else.
Setting out from the trailhead in the village of Dent, you will initially head to the northeast to meet up with the banks of the River Dee, following them to the southeast as you traverse the open countryside along the valley floor. Eventually, the river will continue to the left and you will need to follow Deepdale Beck as it branches off to the right. Continue on to the southeast as you begin to climb up the steep hillside, eventually reaching the summit of Whernside.
Standing atop the highest point in the Yorkshire Three Peaks, you will have a breathtaking view that sprawls out in every direction and provides the feeling of nearly standing on top of the world. After taking in the views, head to the west to descend the steep moorland terrain, eventually meeting up with Occupation Road. Follow this to the northwest, as it winds around the hillside on the lengthy return back to the trailhead in Dent.
