The Lonely Howgills Walk is a fun adventure through the rugged terrain of the Yorkshire Dales that will provide some gorgeous views of the surrounding area. While out on the trail, you will traverse the undulating terrain of the moor and climb to the summit of several hilltops, culminating in the scenic viewpoint atop The Calf. This is a fantastic walk to get a feel for some characteristic Yorkshire Dales terrain.

Getting there

To reach the trailhead for The Lonely Howgills Walk from the People's Hall in Sedbergh, head northeast on Fairholme for 0.2mi and turn right onto Joss Lane. In 433ft, you will find the car park on the left.

The Lonely Howgills Walk Description

Featuring gorgeous views over the surrounding landscape of Yorkshire Dales National Park and a challenging, but fun stretch of terrain that traverses several rugged hills, The Lonely Howgills Walk is a fantastic option for both casual and seasoned walkers alike.

Setting out from the trailhead, you will make your way to the northwest through Sedbergh along its charming streets before breaking to the north to climb uphill across the rugged moor. Here, you will make your way over the summits of Winder and Calders before reaching the viewpoint atop The Calf. Take some time to appreciate the views that sweep across the moor before continuing along the trail as it loops toward the southeast. Meeting up with the River Rawthey, you will follow its winding banks back into Sedbergh, where you began your adventure.
