Ancient Castles of Mallerstang Walk Description

If you are a lover of history and don’t mind traversing a bit of uphill terrain to view interesting historical sites, then the Ancient Castles of Mallerstang Walk will prove to be an excellent excursion in Yorkshire Dales National Park. Remnants of Medieval castles, rugged moorland terrain, and a charming riverside setting await on this amazing walking route.

Setting out from the trailhead just south of Nateby, you will head to the southwest and cross over the River Eden to pass by the 14th Century manor house known as Wharton Hall. From here, you will follow along the winding banks of the river as they lead you past the remnants of Lammerside Castle. This 12th Century building was later fortified with a Pele Tower in the 14th Century to defend against Scotsmen that used to raid the area.

Continue your walk to the southwest, traversing the undulating hillside and crossing over the River Eden once more to visit the 12th Century Pendragon Castle that was built by Ranulph de Meschines. From here, you will climb up the steep hillside to the east and turn to the north, traversing the rugged terrain of the moor on the return to the trailhead where you began.
