The Gunnerside Gill Walk is a charming adventure in Yorkshire Dales National Park that will take you through a wonderfully atmospheric valley made up of rugged moorland terrain. While out on the trail, you will leave the village behind and traverse the rugged terrain alongside Gunnerside Gill, passing by abandoned buildings as you work your way through the valley. While fair weather might make for better views, try completing this trail on a foggy day to walk through a slightly eerie atmosphere!

Gunnerside Gill Walk Description

While the Gunnerside Gill Walk does feature a small amount of elevation gain, it is fairly manageable for walkers of most skill levels and makes this an excellent route to experience a charming valley set within Yorkshire Dales National Park. Abandoned buildings along the trail and a waterfall at the terminus of the route offer some nice highlights in addition to the scenic views across the dale.

Setting out from the village of Gunnerside, you will make your way north along the winding banks of Gunnerside Gill, as it cuts through the charming valley that is flanked on either side by the hilly terrain of the moor. After passing by the abandoned buildings of the Bunton Mine, you will continue on to the north to reach the cascading waters of Blakethwaite Force, passing by it for a short distance to reach the terminus of the route.

From here, you will turn back and retrace your steps through the dale, keeping to the left to gain some elevation along the hillside that will bring you back to the village along an alternate route. Enjoy the views across the valley from this elevated position before descending the hillside on the return to the trailhead.
