Walking the Bolton Abbey, River Wharfe, and Hare Head Circular Trail is an amazing adventure in Yorkshire Dales National Park that features laidback terrain and beautiful views of the Wharfedale landscape. While out on the trail, you will climb uphill through open fields and the moor before looping around the valley on a riverside return to the car park. This is a wonderful intermediate length route that can be enjoyed by a wide variety of outdoor enthusiasts.

Getting there

To reach the trailhead for the Bolton Abbey, River Wharfe, and Hare Head Circular Walk from Skipton, drive northeast on High Street/A6131 for 0.0mi and turn right onto A59, following it for 4.0mi. At the roundabout, take the first exit onto B6160 and follow it for 0.0mi, turning left to enter the car park.

Bolton Abbey, River Wharfe, and Hare Head Walk Description

If you want to explore one of the many scenic dales within Yorkshire Dales National Park but don’t want to commit to an overly long or challenging route, then the Bolton Abbey, River Wharfe, and Hare Head Circular Walk is a great option. This wonderful trail will allow you to experience the variety of terrain and natural beauty of the landscape that can be found within the park, showcasing the winding waterways, vibrant green hills, and charming villages of Wharfedale.

Setting out from the car park in Bolton Abbey, you will initially make your way along the road leading north, before breaking off to the northwest to follow the trail as it climbs up the hillside. After traversing the open fields and passing through a peaceful stretch of forest, you will make your way across the moor to reach Hare Head.

From here, you will turn right and follow Barden Road, eventually breaking away to the northeast on a more direct route that will lead you over the road to reach the banks of the River Wharfe. Turn right and follow along the water’s edge, enjoying the beautiful views of the dale until you reach the Cavendish Pavilion. Here, you will cross over to the east bank of the river and continue on to once again cross over the River Wharfe and pass by the historic Bolton Priory. At this point, it is a short jaunt back to the car park where you began.
