The Section Corner Lake Trail exemplifies the beauty and grandeur of the Wind River Mountain Range. Somewhat of a hidden gem in the Winds, this high-effort, high-reward hike is one of our favorites. If you are afraid of a challenge, then you likely will love this one too.

Section Corner Lake Trail DescriptionSection Corner Lake Trail

Get your steps in and your heart rate up as you hike the Section Corner Lake Trail. This sweat-inducing climb into the high country is not without its challenges, but the payoff is well worth it. As with all sorts of exploration in the range, expect windy and chilly conditions, so dress in layers! While unlikely, bear encounters are possible, so make sure at least one person in your party carries a canister of bear spray. With plenty of water in tow, you should begin your climb in the morning to avoid returning after dusk.

Setting out from the trailhead off the New Fork Willow Creek Road, your high-country hike follows the Section Corner Trail eastwardly, immediately demanding a leg-burning climb, but don’t be discouraged; the terrain will eventually plateau! After some climbing, you will reach the summit of Flattop Mountain and revel in the 360-degree panoramas of the surrounding granite crests. Rest and rehydrate, then merge onto the Pine Creek Canyon Trail. This route will guide you down the eastern slope of Flattop Mountain and over Bluff Park Creek and, subsequently, Lake Creek.

Appreciate the beauty of the mountainous landscape that encompasses you as you make your way to Section Corner Lake which is hemmed by Pine Mountain. Dip your tired feet in the chilly waters, then head back the way you came to the trailhead.
