The North Umpqua Trail: Dread and Terror Segment might sound like it is filled with doom and gloom, but in reality the views along the trail are beautiful enough to warrant the effort. While out hiking this challenging route, you will follow closely alongside the North Umpqua River as it cuts through a canyon, passing by notable features like Lemolo Falls and ending at Lemolo Lake. This trail is long and features a good amount of elevation gain, so be sure to wear proper hiking boots and come prepared with plenty of food and water.
Getting there
The trailhead for this hike can be found along National Forest Development Road 3401, just northeast of Toketee Lake.

Whether you are on a multi-day trek exploring the entire length of the North Umpqua Trail or are simply looking for a long and challenging day hike, the North Umpqua Trail: Dread and Terror Segment is a great route to explore. Be sure to plan for a pick up at the end of the route, as this is a one way trail and backtracking along it would make for a very long day outdoors.
Setting out from the trailhead, you will make your way to the northeast and branch off to the left in order to get off the road and onto the North Umpqua Trail. Here, you will follow along the edge of the North Umpqua River, enjoying the sounds of the rushing water as you follow it through the wooded canyon.
Sections of this trail can be washed out early/late in the season, so be sure to exercise caution when hiking near the water. Eventually, the trail will bend to the southeast, leading you past the majestic sight of Lemolo Falls. From here, it is a quick hike along the river to reach the endpoint of the route near Lemolo Lake.
