Falls of Shin Walk Description

The Falls of Shin Walk in the Scottish Highlands attracts the crowds, thanks to its lovely scenery. Go early if you want to avoid the crowds! Unfortunately, there are steps, so this walk won’t work for wheelchairs or pushchairs.

Expect a range of scenery to unravel as you walk, from the falls to grassy paths flanked by a moody forest to vistas glimpsing back into a glen. The Falls of Shin Walk is entertaining—that’s for sure! Worried about getting lost? Just follow the waymarked paths throughout, and you’ll be just fine.

From the car park, follow the marked path down switchbacks on the other side of the road. When you get to the bottom, take your choice of one of the two viewing areas to start before moving on to the other one. Revel in the all-mighty roar of the River Shin! Look for salmon as well if you’re here during early autumn or summer. After, head back up the zigzags to the road before following the blue-marked trail on your right.

Start descending to reach the river atop the falls! Follow the path as it veers left to cross over the road. Get ready for eerie forest vibes to swallow you up as you meander to the visitor centre. En route, pass a stone picnic table. Pause here to munch if you brought snacks along!

Eventually, you’ll return to the car park, but our route doesn’t end here! Follow the yellow waymarked loop to keep going. You’ll see some paths going left, but don’t take these. Stay on the track to the right! You may be tempted by the ‘Shortcut via Pond’ sign at the junction, but ignore this and continue uphill.

Pass felled trees en route, taking the chance to glance back at the views dipping into the glen. Take a left when you reach the grassy path and go by more picnic tables (how many snacks did you bring?) and wooden sculptures. At the signpost, continue ahead to go down through the forest to return to the car park.
