The Camusdarach Beach Walk may be the setting for the film, Local Hero, but it also creates the perfect beach scene: smooth pristine sand hemmed by lapping bright blue water. So pack your swimsuit and snacks, bring along your dog, and get ready for an adventure that focuses more on lounging than walking. But hey! The route is so pretty; you could repeat it as many times as you like.

Camusdarach Beach Walk Description

It’s hard for beach walks to disappoint, isn’t it? Scottish Highlands’ Camusdarach Beach Walk falls into the people-pleaser category. This walk boasts phenomenal seaside views and was the setting for the cult film, Local Hero, making this a popular attraction for several! Thankfully, it’s a beach, so there’s lots of space to pick your spot for the day. On a different note, the terrain, naturally, is sandy and follows dune paths, which adds a level of technicality to this walk. There are also steps and a kissing gate to negotiate!

But the setting isn’t only incredible because of the pristine sand stitched with bright blue waves flirting with the shore; the backdrop of the faded and craggy Cuillin in the Isle of Skye elevates the beauty of the scene. Get ready for a memorable beach day! However, you can’t just show up and reach the beach; it does require some walking, which we’ll explain below.

From the car park, the Camusdarach Beach Walk starts when you cross the footbridge, nicely signed ‘To the Beaches’. On the other side, go right to follow the path along the burn. If you’re walking in summer, breathe in the wildflowers flanking the path! Go straight at the path junction to travel through dunes and reach the beach. You can choose to plop down whenever, but our route keeps on going.

Go left to cross the sand! When the tide’s out, you can go by the rocky structure, but if not, you’ll have to travel over it. Right after, you’ll go by another rocky promontory, leading into the next part of the beach. Bask in the peninsula as it opens up to more sea views! Continue along—crossing grassy terrain to reach the beach looking west. From here, go up the dunes via steps before a kissing gate to start travelling away from the beach. Make your way to another gate as you follow a fence to your left. Go through the gate and take a left to travel among gorse bushes.

Soon, you’ll reach Camusdarach Campsite. Go left to enter the camping area before passing through a gate. After, take a left to follow the road, which bends left toward old farmhouses, taking you to another track. Keep going straight to follow a grassy track when the path veers left.

Continue along the grassy track until it disintegrates into a path and dips down to meet up with the route that takes you over the footbridge back to the car park, where the Camusdarach Beach Walk began.

Camusdarach Beach Walk

Camusdarach Beach attracts flocks of people thanks to its incredible, flawless beachfront scenery, giving it the chance to star as the location in the cult classic film, Local Hero.
