The Tharp’s Log Trail is a wonderful trail that culminates at a rustic cabin in a hollowed-out sequoia. Built in 1862, the primitive accommodation was named for Hale D. Tharp and was used as a refuge for pioneers in the late 1800s. Today, the shack remains for curious adventurers like ourselves to explore and be transported back in time.

Tharp’s Log Trail Description

Explore the giant forest and revel in the grandeur of the old-growth sequoias as you venture the Tharp’s Log Trail. This wonderful footpath, though short, offers a variety of scenery, including sights of the area’s lush meadows, the encompassing mountains, the towering trees, vibrant wildflowers, and wildlife. This area sees plenty of traffic, so head out in the early morning or late evening to avoid the rush. Note entrance to the park costs $35USD per vehicle or $20USD per person for pedestrians or cyclists.

Your beautiful trek along the Tharp’s Log Trail begins from the High Sierra Trailhead. Setting out from here, follow the High Sierra Trail southeast to an expansive vantage point of the lovely crescent meadow. Admire the scene, then merge briefly onto the Crescent Meadow Loop Trail. At the following intersection, turn right, and you will be diverted onto the Tharp’s Log Trail. Wander this route northeast, through giant sequoias and along Long Meadow. Marvel in the beauty of the surrounding wilderness, and you will ultimately reach the famous cabin.

Be respectful of this historic landmark and explore the rustic accommodations housed in the hollowed-out sequoia. After you are through appreciating this unique shelter, head back the way you came to the trailhead.
