Avalanche Gulch via Main Range Trail Description
High demand and high reward, the Avalanche Gulch via Main Range Trail is a worthwhile excursion in Colorado. Reserved for experienced hikers, this trek can be exhausting and dangerous if you are not properly prepared. Best trekked from June until September – when the threat of avalanches is minimal – this vertiginous trek will guide hikers up to a breathtaking alpine overlook. The route ascends rocky scree along a narrow woodland path, and while dogs are permitted along the trail, it is not recommended for them, as the rocky and technical terrain has proven difficult for pups! Though not necessary, we highly suggest trekking poles to help navigate the vertical terrain.
Embark on your journey along the Avalanche Gulch via Main Range Trail from the Avalanche Trailhead. From here, track the Colorado Trail Segment 13 north, into the Collegiate Peaks wilderness. Shortly after your departure, you will be guided beneath the shade of towering pines. Navigate a set of tightly wound switchbacks before intersecting with Hughes Creek. Mind your footing as you continue your climb up the vertiginous terrain, making sure to enjoy the scenery along the way.
You will confront your turn-around point when you summit the ridge and meet the junction with the Mount Yale Trail. Revel in the scenery from the exposed ridge, noticing Mount Yale towering above in the west, and admire the grandeur of the mountainous wilderness. When you are ready to descend, retrace your footing along the path back to the trailhead.
